Out of Control Cable Clutter?

We’ve got our fair share of cables around the office, so we can definitely offer a few tips. Luckily, most of these just utilize things you already have lying around, so you don’t have to spend any cash.

1. Go to unplug your laptop or phone, and the charger slips behind the desk into the dark unknown? Fix it with a quick modification to a binder clip. Pinch the metal prongs to remove it from the plastic body, insert the cable, and then reattach the prong. Now all you have to do is clip it to the desk or shelf. Voila! Never chase after the cable again.

2. Store unused cables in Ziploc bags- wind them into a circle, and then let them expand naturally once you seal the bag. No kinks in the cable, no tangling, and they’ll never get caught on other cables you’ve stored in the same box.

3. Use matching bread ties of the same color on the top and bottom of very long cords- that way, you can identify what it is you’re unplugging among the cluster of cables near the outlet. Alternatively, use small label stickers on the plug itself. 

4. To keep unused extension cords orderly, wrap them up and store them in old paper towel tubes. They’re usually easier to find in the house than zip ties or Velcro wraps, even if they aren’t as pretty.

5. If you’re sick of accidentally kicking cables under your desk, consider using some zip ties or Velcro wraps to keep them bundled and attached to a table leg. Basic Velcro wrap can be purchased from most craft stores by the roll, or you can find some specially made for cable organization.
 

Of course, there are plenty of nifty products you can buy that will accomplish all the same things- Office Depot and Staples are good places to look.  If you find a cool product, or have a neat trick for organization, let us know!
