What Upgrades Should I Buy For My Computer?
Buying a new computer can be daunting. There are tons of add-ons and extra features you can purchase, and it can be a challenge deciding which ones are worth the money.
For many consumers, an “out-of-the-box” computer will do just fine. But if you’re looking to customize, here are some options that might appeal to you;
Video Cards:
There are some higher end video cards that can get quite expensive, and if you’re a dedicated gamer, they might be worth looking into. For most users, though, the cost isn’t worth it. If you pass on a higher end card, you likely won’t miss out.
Memory:
Memory is one of the components that can make a computer "fast.” Most new computers come with at least 2gb of Ram, which should be more than enough for most everyday tasks. If all you’re doing is surfing the web and using Word, you probably don’t have to worry about memory.
Processor:
In combination with memory, this determines how “fast” your computer will go. If you’re planning on using memory- or graphic-intensive programs, you might consider investing in a higher-end processor. But if you’re just sticking to Word and Excel, a top of the line processor won’t be necessary.
Keep in mind that the prices of these upgrades can fluctuate depending on the seller, the brand, and how new the technology is. Just like any other shopping decision, it’s always a good idea to search online for better deals, and to never buy something the very first day it comes out. Prices usually drop around a month or two after their release date, so a little patience can save you a lot of money.
Also make sure that you either know how to install the components, or, if not, that you’re factoring the installation fee into the price.
So- is it worth it to upgrade an out-of-the-box computer?
That really depends on you. The most important thing is consider what you need from your machine, not what a machine can potentially do. If all you want is to print papers and send email, a lower-end computer will be no different than a thousand dollar custom build. And with all that extra money in your pocket, you’re bound to be far happier with your purchase.
