Missouri's No Call List Goes Mobile
Despite the increased use of texting by telemarketers, Missouri residents were unable to add cellphone numbers to the state’s No Call list. That changed Thursday, after Governor Jay Nixon signed House Bill 1549 into law.
As long as they have a Missouri address, consumers can now add any personal cellphone number to the registry. These numbers are reported quarterly to telemarketers, so those who sign up before July 31st should expect unwanted calls to stop by October 1st.
After that date, telemarketers who continue to call or text can be subjected to some hefty fines. The Attorney General’s office is asking consumers to record the numbers of telemarketers who repeatedly call - but they can only act on the complaint if the consumer’s number is already on the no call list.
Missouri’s No Call List does allow for some exceptions for telemarketers - these include non-profits, telephone companies, and businesses that a consumer has a relationship with. There are also exceptions for companies or professionals attempting to set appointments.
The Attorney General’s office recommends that consumers sign up for both Missouri’s No Call list and the national Do Not Call registry. This offers the maximum protection for consumers against unsolicited calls.
