Explanation of Charges, Surcharges and Taxes

 

Depending on your package, the following items may appear on your Socket bill.
 
Subscriber Connection Fee
This is a federally regulated flat charge that allows a phone company to recover some of its costs associated with the use of facilities that link each telephone line to the telephone network. Without this charge, people would be unable to make a long distance call. This charge is sometimes called a Network Access Fee, Subscriber  Line Charge-Interstate, Access Surcharge, Federal Subscriber Line Charge or End User Common Line.
  
Federal Universal Service Fund (FUSF)
This surcharge is a legally mandated fee to subsidize rural telephone companies to help them reach remote homes. It is applied to any charge that has an inter-state component, such as long-distance.
 
Relay Missouri Surcharge
This surcharge is a legally mandated fee to subsidize various programs for the deaf and disabled. It is 8 cents per phone line or the equivalent of a phone line. It includes the Missouri Relay Service that enables the hearing impaired to make calls using teletype devices and an operator. Other telephone companies also call it the Missouri Deaf and Disabled Fund, MO State Deaf Tax Surcharge or Telecommunications Relay Charge.
 
Missouri Universal Service Fund (MUSF)
This surcharge is a legally mandated surcharge used to help low-income and disabled customers to obtain access to affordable essential telecommunications services.
 
City Franchise Tax
This is a city tax assessed to customers of a franchised utility. Rates vary based on your specific location. Revenue goes twoards the general funds for the city. Applies to all local services, if applicable.
 
Federal Excise Tax
This is a federal tax of 3% of all telecom charges. Funds go to the United States General Treasury. Applies to all regulated services.
 
County E911 Tax
This is a county fee to pay for the 911 emergency system operated by your County. Rates vary based on your specific location. Applies to all basic local services, if applicable.
 
City, County and State Sales Tax
These taxes are charged as a percentage of the Relay Missouri Surcharge, the Federal Universal Service Fee, the Missouri Universal Service Fee and any service charges. It is the same sales tax paid on itmes purchased at any retail store. Rates vary based on the location where the service is provided. Funds go to the General Revenue for your specific city, county and state.
