Meet Kevin Sell, Field Services Technician

Every month, Socket employees nominate and vote on a co-worker who best exemplifies our Core Values and Beliefs.

This month, we picked Kevin Sell.

Kevin came to Socket a little over a year ago, bringing a decade's worth of field service experience to the position. Lately, he's been performing pre-installation work in rural Boone and Callaway counties. As we prepare to begin installing fiber-to-the-home services in this area, Kevin talks with customers about how the fiber will be run to their home.

The Development of Socket's Hosted PBX Product

It’s not like it’s the first time. We have done it many times before.  But it’s still one of the most fun parts of being in business. The moment a plan goes the way you had predicted it would on the back of a piece of paper years before.

We knew years ago that we would have to get into the phone system business. We could see the slow march of our PBX partners to start offering SIP trunks from a national provider to replace the phone service that Socket was providing today. We even looked at traditional PBX offerings, and considered purchasing an existing interconnection company to get us up and running fast.

Fiber - Dream to Reality

Fiber directly to someone’s home?  You honestly think we could do that?

I recall these conversations vividly from almost ten years ago in a cramped little office above what is now Bangkok Gardens on Cherry Street in Columbia, MO. We had painted the walls, bought a used conference table, several faux leather couches and a lot of white boards to create a place that the owners of Socket could get away and talk about what’s next.

Meet Nick Pena, Outside Plant Coordinator

Every month, Socket employees nominate and vote on a co-worker who best exemplifies our Core Values and Beliefs.

This month, we picked Nick Peña.

Nick's been around for a while. He first became a Sockteer almost 10 years ago, as a young, eager technical support representative. He worked his way through Socket, sporting a variety of hairstyles as he did--including a ponytail, mohawk and shaved head.

Meet Ralph Wood, Custodial Services

Every month, Socket employees nominate and vote on a co-worker who best exemplifies our Core Values and Beliefs This month, we picked Ralph Wood.

Ralph's been cleaning up our messes for nearly two years now. And as a company made up of mostly guys, let's just say we're not the neatest bunch.

He shows up at 5:30 AM every weekday to keep the place looking great. And he gives us all a smile and a "Good morning" every time we see him.

Socketeer-of-the-Year 2011

Seven years ago a prestigious award was created called Socketeer-of-the-Year.

It's a cool honor we created to recognize one of our monthly You-Make-the-Difference-Award winners.

This year, at our annual company Christmas party, Socket owners George, John and Carson revealed their choice for the 2011 winner--Allie Schomaker.

So 7 must be Allie’s lucky number. Not only did she win this award in its seventh year but she was able to see her favorite artist, Kenny Chesney, in the seventh month of the year.

Not Your Average Day at the Office

It's Ugly Sweater Day here at the Socket office, and we've got some doozies.

Yep. Nothing says holiday cheer like ice-skating Santas, crocheted pigs and kissing snowmen.

Luckily, we can hide most of our folks behind the phones. But if you're planning to come to the office today, you might want to bring a pair of sunglasses to shield your eyes from the sequins, glitter and reflective ornaments.

Meet Dave Sill, Inside Network Operations Manager

Every month, Socket employees nominate and vote on a co-worker who best exemplifies our Core Values and Beliefs.

This month, we picked Dave Sill, inside network operations manager.

Dave's been around here since January 1999 (all the way back before Y2K!). So he's been involved with everything from splicing fiber to writing software.
